Cruise control

Latest project is the installation of a cruise control. I used a VDO compact tempostat X10-397-106-821 . It contains all electrical and mechanical parts and a installation description. The system can be used for all diesel and gasoline cars with mechanical fuel injection.

Main component is the motor unit with the electronic circiut. Under the red cap are some switches to adapt the unit to the car.

The cruise control unit can be mounted in the motro compartment, if there is enough room left, or under the back seat as I did it. This has the advantage that it is a dry place and the switches can be reached easily to complete the installation and adapt the system. It is also possible to see the red “diagnosis LED” from the driver place to test the function of the user interface after installation. A disadvantage is that you can hear the motor if you have seats that are not completely closed as in my Multivan.

Some pictures of the installation. Note : the electric cables are too short, you have to make them longer and lead them to the driver interface.

The brake-light switches have to be connected, they can be seen on one of the photos. It does not matter which one of the switches you use. The red/yellow cable comes from the fuse, the red/black one leads to the brake lights.

Installation of the second “gas pedal cable” at the fuel injection pump. The second one can directly be connected to the first one since it moves max. 40mm as the gaspedal does.

The speedsignal can be connected to the radio, if it has GALA functionality (radio becomes louder when driving faster). The signal looks like on the picture on the left side. I measured approximately 4000 pulses per kilometer at the GALA signal at the radio.

At the end you can check the correct functionality of the signals with the “diagnosis LED” and have to set the switches according to your car.

For my diesel engine I used these settings:

amplification“small”, pulses per km “3875-4499”, drop “4 or 5 cylinder small”, signal form “square”, manual gearbox, user interface“original VDO”
